Find the Joy

Remember, today is awesome -

Find joy in the ordinary, for if you take the time to really pause and consciously contemplate your life, you will realize it's actually pretty amazing.

Until next time...

Be open to whatever comes next...

It's Spring...(breathe and enjoy)

It was one of those
March days when the sun
shines hot and the wind
blows cold; when it is
summer in the light, and
winter in the shade.
                                   - Great Expectations

Oh spring! That wonderful season of expectation, hope, growth, and renewal...

Although the temperature is keeping steady between 30 and 40 degrees here in New York, the feelings of spring are in full effect. The days are longer, there is a bounce in peoples' steps. It seems the world is feeling so hopeful about the future - looking ahead with excitement and purpose.

Personally, I am running into my future, full steam ahead and arms wide open; making the decision to keep my eyes on the road ahead and refusing to look back.

What are you looking forward to this season and beyond? What thoughts are you planting now to create the future you want?

Something to think on ~
It is in all of us to defy expectations, to go into the world and to be brave, and to want to need, to hunger for adventures; to embrace change and chance and risk, so that we may breathe and know what it is to be free...

Bucket List

For the past couple of weeks, I have been embracing my inner cowgirl at Cimarron Ranch in Putnam Valley, NY.

I have wanted to take horseback riding lessons for forever, and a couple of weeks ago I just made up my mind to do it; so I googled, did a little research, read some reviews, and ended up at Cimarron Ranch riding a gentle Palamino named Midas a week later. The lessons have been great! My instructor Leigh is so knowledgeable, and I've really enjoyed the routine of riding.

It's funny, I was speaking to a friend of mine recently; telling her about some of the things I've done since moving to New York - exploring the city, going to see The Christmas Spectacular at Radio City Music hall over the holidays, horseback riding lessons, etc. and she was so happy to hear that I was "crossing things off my bucket list."

I had to stop for a second and really process what she was saying - I mean, yes, I've dreamed of living in New York since I was in my twenties, I've wanted to see the Christmas Spectacular for as long as I can remember, and horseback riding lessons have been on my radar for years; but I guess I never really thought about any of those things being on my "bucket list." After all, they were such small things - when I think of a bucket list, I think of skydiving and traveling the world. You know, really BIG things. That being said, what I've come to realize is this, small things can be an adventure too, totally bucket list worthy. After all, a trip around the world has to start somewhere...

What will you cross off of your bucket list today?

Until next time...

We live in a wonderful world that is full of beauty, charm and adventure. There is no end to the adventures we can have if we only seek them with our eyes open.

A Twinkle in Time

This has been a long week - and with all the snow we've been getting, I have been really anxious for spring - until today.

Don't get me wrong, I'm still ready for spring. I'm looking forward to trees budding and flowers blooming, to warm breezes and longer days; but today I took a moment to really appreciate the now and revel in the beauty of winter.

My parents, a family friend, and I went hiking this morning at the Michael Ciaiola Conservation Area in Patterson, NY; a small town about 50 miles north of Manhattan. As we walked, I felt my body and mind begin to relax. Listening to the sounds of our boots in the snow, the wind blowing gently through the trees, and the rushing water of the falls was a meditation of sorts. At one point I just stood and lifted my face to the sky, allowing myself to really bask in the warmth of the sun.

Our morning hike helped me realize how necessary it is for me to spend more time outside; communing with nature and taking joy in the moment. Life can get so busy at times, and as a society we tend to overlook the beauty all around us, thinking about what we have to do next and forgetting to focus on, and enjoy the present.

Today, give yourself the moment, a twinkle in time; for today is the youngest you will ever be and the oldest you have ever been.

Exploring Beacon

Happy February friends! Can you believe we're already in the second month of 2013? Time is flying...

I started my February with a visit to Beacon, NY, a small town about an hour and a half north of Manhattan. I had heard there was a lot to explore in the way of gluten free restaurants, antique shops, vintage clothing stores, and museums; but when we arrived most things were...closed - cue the disappointment.

After talking to a few people, we realized that Beacon is more of a spring/summer town - much more active during the warmer months.

Since we were there, we decided to take a stroll down Main Street anyway. Along the way, I saw some very interesting window displays, found a gluten free bakery (shout out to Ella's Bellas and their delicious apple turnovers), browsed through the one antique shop that was open, and tasted chocolate covered bacon (don't knock it 'til you try it) at a specialty chocolate shop.

All in all, it was a relaxing afternoon. I would definitely like to go back once the weather warms up and see the town in action.

2013

2013...

I am on a journey...
with my work, explorations, and a few sad stories.
I travel with a suitcase full
of outrageous blessings.
I am on a quest for truth,
beauty, and quiet joy.
I am an artist, a writer,
an explorer.

What do you envision for your life this year? Get up, get out and make it happen.

Optimistic

This past weekend, a little time spent in the sun and fresh air, coupled with dinner and an amazing group of ladies really helped me put some things into perspective.

While looking around the table at my friends, and the next day lifting my face to feel the warmth of the sun; I realized...life is good, and while I may not have all the answers, or know what my future holds - I'm optimistic...

This is a short post, but I will leave you with a quote from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. that I personally find very encouraging. It serves to remind me daily that whatever I do, I must continue my journey...

"If you can't fly, then run, if you can't run, then walk, if you can't walk, then crawl; but whatever you do, you have to keep moving forward."
                        -Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Until next time...
